Let's talk about BlockMedx

Hey everyone, I came across this project recently and I thought it would be a good topic starter into the opioids crisis and possible solutions to solve this issue with the use of blockchain technology. However, I wanted to see how viable a project like this would be in tackling this problem and if it is something worth contributing to.The problemSince the opioids epidemic, we have seen that more than 300,000 Americans have died from overdoses involving opioids since 2000.Additionally, two million adults over the age of twelve have a substance abuse problem involving prescription pain relievers. The American Society of Addiction Medicine reports that drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the United States, with almost half of those fatalities coming from prescription opioid abuse. In 2017, the White House released, The President’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis report. This report encourages more digital technologies to address the crisis.SolutionAccording to their white paper: BlockMedx intends to change the way prescription drugs are prescribed and supplied by creating a secure and effective system for providers to prescribe, pharmacists to fill, and patients to manage their prescriptions. Using the Ethereum blockchain, BlockMedx intends to be a secure, HIPAA and regulatory compliant, end-to-end e-prescribing platform for transmitting, analyzing, and managing prescriptions.Prescriptions will be securely transmitted and recorded on the blockchain. A token will be paired to each specific prescription, securely verifying the prescription origin from the point of creation by the physician.*For more information on the application process check out their video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXyv-E34VuM*Who is the team behind BlockMedx?BlockMedx was founded in 2017 by Michael J Brunner, PharmD, CEO. We help companies launch products online and grow their digital business. My thoughts: We have seen similar healthcare blockchain startups around the idea of creating a e-prescribing platform solution, but so far in my research , they are the only ones who are aimed at combating the opioid epidemic , which is a high value problem considering it cost around 75bn/annually.However, one con I found is that according to their roadmap, they are set to release their MVP by early summer, but there is yet to be any further announcement on that.Still something I will keep my eye on , especially with the announcement from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) that they will officially adopt NCPDP SCRIPT version 201701 for electronic prescribing (ePrescribing) on January 1, 2020 , in other words they will be updating part of the periodic ePrescribing standards process, and also implementate a new act ( CARA), where plan sponsors may limit at-risk beneficiaries’ access to coverage of “frequently abused drugs” (opioids and benzodiazepines) to selected prescribers and/or network pharmacies. Now the race starts to provide the best and easiest E-prescribing platform. via /r/icocrypto https://ift.tt/2sgXAlF
